The Weekly Bushel #12
The Weekly Bushel
8/12/2008
Hello,
Welcome to another week of LotFotL produce. This week, we are finally getting into some of our most heavily desireable hot season fruits. While tomatoes are very abundant and should grace everyone's shares in full force next week or the week after, melons, big bell peppers, and eggplant will be a bit more sporadic. The rains of June forced us to plant a little bit of everything in 2 waves. So, instead of having lots of melons at once, we split our season in 2. While we'd like to offer everyone melons every week, we may be forced to offer only those picking up every other week the opportunity to get melons next week, as to make sure that they get some. Eggplant may also be rationed in this first cropping, so full shares should expect eggplant instead of melons next week. That said, we have what should be my best season yet for melons, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplant!
See what it takes to grow your food
We would love it if you and your family would come out and work with us, at least once, before the winter snaps shut this first year of LotFotL Community Farm. Right now, we are substantially behind in weeding carrots, peas, and our scorzonera and salsify patches. We could use help trellising tomatoes, planting broccoli, harvesting our boutiful storage onion beds, and with the harvesting of your food! If interested, call or email for directions. We typically take it a bit easy on Sunday, but I'm more than excited about taking it a bit less easy if Sunday is a good day for you to come out. Anyday is a good day.

Changes for On Farm Pickup
From now until the end of the season, I will only be at the white barn on the weeks when all members pick up. I've enjoyed that time and the interactions this opportunity provides. But, I've got too much field work to do, and need to make that a priority. Everything will be set up for you to pick up your share in the manner we've been doing from day one.
The Food!
We picked roots for this week's share, only to ultimately realize that we didn't have enough for everyone. So while we're lacking roots, we are adding fruits. Much more edible apples this week, and the melons are tremendously tastey, even the really small ones. Next week, expect:
- more melons (maybe for all, definitely for MEOW's)
- eggplants (definitely for fulls, maybe for MEOW's)
- tomatoes (80%)
- kale or swiss chard
- broccoli
- scorzonera or salsify (50%)
- mini chocolate, yellow, and red bells
- winter squash (50%)
- cucumbers
- dragon tongue beans (heavier bags)
- thyme
- dill
- basils
- apples (hopefully)
- pears (likely)
- concord grapes (probably the following week)
This week's share includes:
- onions
- broccoli
- broccoli greens
- parsley
- sunshine watermelons
- assorted apples (transparents, crabs, and varieties we think are cortlands and melbas, but not really sure)
- bell peppers
- jalapenos
- dragon tongue beans (light cooking will maintain lovely color, while extra cooking will cook out purples)
Thanks again for supporting us this year. Hope you've enjoyed this and learned as much as we have. See you soon!
Sincerely,
tim huth
